The Story of Xochimilco

A Living Heritage of Mexico City

Xochimilco is what remains of the great lake system that once covered the Valley of Mexico. Its canals and chinampas, the floating gardens first built by Aztec farmers, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Families still farm the chinampas, and the canals still carry flowers, music and food every weekend.
